The Kemi bioproduct mill project relies on Patera for scaffolding safety supervision

Occupational safety measurements also help identify things that have been done correctly

A separate indicator has been developed for measuring the safety level of scaffolding, based on an indicator that measures occupational safety on construction sites. The indicator also indicates what has been done correctly. The target level for things done correctly is 95% of the observations made. During safety rounds, the scaffolding safety supervisor also monitors overall safety and cleanliness.

Scaffolding supervision has improved the quality level of scaffolding

Working at height has been identified as a safety priority in the Kemi bioproduct mill project, which is why the project also invests heavily in scaffolding safety. “The project uses a lot of scaffolding and technical fall protection solutions are used in accordance with safety instructions when working at height”, says safety expert Vilho Pietilä.

Scaffolding supervision has also helped scaffolding clients, or contractors, to identify scaffolding safety requirements and demand the right level of quality when ordering scaffolding.

Patera has strong experience in scaffolding safety

“In order to ensure scaffolding safety in Kemi, we decided to consult Patera, which has strong experience in scaffolding safety and working at height. In addition, Patera has been involved in the annual maintenance shutdowns of Metsä Fibre’s mills, so they are already familiar with safety rules and scaffolding instructions”,says Pietilä.

Long-term cooperation in scaffolding safety

Patera has been developing scaffolding safety on a long-term basis in cooperation with the various units of Metsä Group, and scaffolding safety training has been held for scaffolding clients and those responsible for scaffolding safety. The safety of the scaffolding is better, as there are now fewer deficiencies. While the target level of scaffolding safety measurements at the Kemi bioproduct mill site is 95%, the site’s measurement level for 2022 was 96.9%.
